Donna Napolitano
Donna Napolitano, CEO and co-founder of Mechanical Energy Systems, Inc. has always been a primary mover and promoter of alternative energy systems in the state of Michigan, since 1982.

Respected in her field, Donna is a highly sought speaker at renewable energy events and has appeared at conferences throughout the United States. Donna has also appeared on multiple television programs and can often be heard over the airwaves promoting the virtues of solar energy particular to the Midwest. Donna and her husband Joe have installed and serviced thousands of systems and are fast becoming the largest distributors and trainers of solar applications in Michigan.

Joseph Napolitano
Joe is the President Chief Operations Officer and co-founder, of Mechanical Energy Systems, Inc. (MES) founded in 1985. The technical expert behind alternative energy and energy efficient products since 1979, Joe analyses the performance and quality of all components, designs the system, oversees the project, and monitors the installation. Joe has implemented the installation of over 7,000 units primarily in Michigan with many throughout the states and the Caribbean.

1975

Joe Napolitano starts in the
renewable energy business.

1979

Joe begins to establish relationships with FAFCO (solar pool heating company), Thermodynamics (solar water heating), Solar Wall and Northern Comfort (solar space heating) as installers and dealers.

1982

Joe becomes CEO at Fortune 500 solar thermal company in Novi, MI. Donna Napolitano joins company as sales and financing representative.

1984

Most solar companies in SE Michigan close operations due to sudden market and policy changes in energy. Thousands of solar customers left orphaned.

1985

Joe and Donna Napolitano establish Mechanical Energy Systems (MES), purchase customer lists, and begin servicing orphaned customers. For the next 20 yrs., MES is the only solar service company with a warehouse and showroom in SE Michigan, within a 200 mile radius. Joe manages operations & customer service, Donna specializes in marketing, sales & public relations.

1986

1986 MES celebrates its first year in business.

1988

Mechanical Energy Systems incorporates. Operations expanded to include energy efficient products, such as Solatube Natural Daylighting systems and solar powered attic fans.

1989

MES installs its first wind and PV system at Seaholm High School, in Birmingham, MI. Alternative energy student education programs created.

MES showroom expands into working solar demonstration center,
featuring smart energy products. Installed Solatubes throughout
office, electric lighting only used at night.

1996

MES participates in 1st National Solar Tour open house every year following.

1998

Donna & Joe attend FAFCO’s one-millionth solar pool panel celebration in Florida.

2000

Installation of second wind turbine and PV system for new wing at
Seaholm High School.

2001

Expanded energy savings and home comfort based business to include high efficiency HVAC products and services.

2002

Experienced growth and development in retail sales and service in solar and energy efficient products. Additional solar equipment installed on MES building/showroom.

2005

Installed first commercial solar pool heating system in Ann Arbor for demonstration purposes. Began training seminars for potential dealers, and signed first dealer.

2009

MES creates eco1Energy division to work with growing dealer network. MES becomes WasteKnot partner with Washtenaw County, and is recognized for green practices, and reduction of waste. Company expands, hires CAD Designer, Project Manager and Logistics Manager. MES is selected to install solar electric panels on the Governor’s residence in Lansing.

2010

MES celebrates 25 years in business. Donna Napolitano and MES gain federally recognized “Woman Owned” status through WBENC certification. MES becomes approved contractor, authorized to work with DTE, Solar Current program, Michigan Saves, EnerWorks.

2011

Donna Napolitano is named Green Business Leader 2011.

Joe & Donna Napolitano attend SunPower conference and
become authorized installers for SE Michigan.

Joe Napolitano achieves SunPower certification, following intensive
training. MES installs 5.3 kW grid-tied SunPower/Enphase solar
electric system on their solar showroom/headquarters building.

MES creates new solar division, "The Solar Specialist." Installation
and service on residential furnace and air conditioning units will
continue under the MES division. Donna Napolitano interviewed
on the Glen Haege Master Handyman radio show. The Solar Specialist experiences rapid increase in solar electric system installations.
